Canvas colour
Having rented a flat for a long time I understand how frustrating it can be not to be able to update the decor of your home - or even to hang anything on the wall in some cases! - so I'm always happy when I see an interior design idea which can be used in a rented home.
I spotted this picture on the Poppytalk blog and immediately thought it would be a great idea for those in rented accommodation, temporary homes and smaller places:
The idea is a very simple one, executed well. Take an old canvas, a frame or screen - on a large scale - and cover it with a beautiful fabric of your choice. Then instead of painting or wallpapering you can update your room using this as a backdrop to a favourite chair. The beauty in this is that once you've bought the screen you can change it as many times as you like for a relatively small amount of money spent on fabric, and a small amount of time spent stapling.
It's a very flexible idea for those in rented accommodation as you can simply prop it up against the wall and take it with you when you leave. It's also good for those with smaller rooms who perhaps want to introduce some pattern, but not across a whole wall. You can choose heavily patterned fabrics for a high-impact effect or something more minimalist for a contemporary finish. Consider whether to clash patterns with your sofa or curtains, whether you want to use complementary colours for a softer effect or mix it up for something really bold. There are lots of different ways to work this easy DIY project and each one will help to give your home a more individual feel.
So what's involved? Five easy steps...
FIVE EASY DIY FABRIC SCREEN STEPS
1 - Buy, or make, a large canvas frame or screen
2 - Seek out some fabulous fabric [*Tip* choose a heavier, canvas fabric as this will be easier to work with]
3 - Staple tightly to the reverse of the frame - this will take a little patience, time and a bit of skill to get a good finish, but is well worth the effort.
4 - Prop up against the wall behind a favourite chair, as a headboard for your bed, or as a backdrop to a small table.
5 - Stand back and admire!
What would your choice be for your room? Have you tackled a project like this before? Share your tips if you have!
