Stylish concrete flooring

I pinned this image a while ago:

And it has really stayed with me since.

There's something so lush about the quality of the colour and the staining patterns that this simple concrete floor takes on the appearance of water. I'm not sure how it would look once you added furniture or objects, but just as is, it's really gorgeous.

This got me thinking about concrete flooring and what a versatile medium it is, so here are a few choice floors for inspiration:

Painted geometric designs adorn this concrete floor. Modern and monochrome.

I love this idea from vintagerevivals.com - a DIY painted concrete floor in a wood-grain style. Hand-painted effect, cool design and very individual.

Painted rug-effect concrete floor
If you're feeling really brave then you could attempt this painted rug-effect on the concrete using stencils and complementary colours.

If pattern is a bit off-puttin,g then painting a concrete floor in a solid colour is another option. This baby blue number makes the concrete finish feel softer, and provides a nice light backdrop for the kitchen.

Or go for something dramatic with a black/charcoal stain to create a high-contrast look with white walls.

Last, but by no means least, is a simple polished concrete floor. I love how a polish can transform a basic material like concrete into something similar a high-end marble finish. This floor works particularly well with wood tones and monochrome, but I can imagine it also teamed with bright pops of primary colours or warm midcentury vintage hues and shapes. Not perhaps the one to choose if you favour the country-cottage aesthetic, but a strong base for lots of other styles.

Which is your favourite? I think for me it is still the blue stained picture i started out with in my exploration of this stylish flooring option, although the painted woodgrain runs a close second for sheer fun and originality!

A lot of people find the idea of concrete in the home too cold, but I think the images above show that concrete can be versatile, fun and even forgiving. What do you think? Would you go for concrete in your home?
