Random Trend: The Hanging Branch
Spotting random interiors trend is a minor hobby of mine. I love how gradually something filters through to your consciousness as you realise you've seen it in a magazine, you've pinned a picture of it, it's featured on a blog you read and so on. My brain files away all these random sightings until gradually it becomes aware of the repetition and that these little ideas are part of a broader Random Trend.
Here's one I'm enjoying at the moment: The Hanging Branch. It's a fun trend because you can DIY it and use it in lots of different ways. Plus it's rustic, doesn't cost a lot and pretty high-impact when done well. So here are a few ideas for how to introduce this random trend into your home:
I know, I know, it's not Christmas any more. But this picture is a great illustration of one of the classic Hanging Branch uses... as something to hang pretty objects from. (Image from Sweet Paul)
Here's another festive edition, but I think this could be rolled out at any time of year. It's summer? Do this in the garden and eat outdoors - fabulous lighting and all natural. it's Easter? Hang eggs from it! It's Halloween? Go spooky with draped cobwebs! Really the choice is yours, but a hanging branch over a table is a great way to create a talking point. A slightly heftier version, this sturdy branch has been used to create a low-hanging candleabra. I personally think it dominates a little, what do you think? (Image from Desiretoinspire)
This is something of a random one, but so cute. Use it to display something you collect... Love miniature toy robots? Hang them from a branch! (Image from Forever Love blog)
Now if you're not going to hang decorations from a branch, can you find a practical use for this trend? Yes you can! Here a little clothes rail for pretty baby outfits has been made from a rustic branch. (Image from The Happy Home blog)
And one for the grown-ups too...
DIY yourself a bed headboard with a branch and some hanging flower garlands. You could also use geometric garlands for something less girly. (Image from Nordstrom)
Use your branch against a wall to create a sort of inspiration hanging space - clip pictures, notes, swatches and more to it to make a pretty moodboard like this. (Image from Eldrids blog)
Or go a bit more structured and hang a gallery of pictures from it - click the picture to see the full DIY on The Bird's Papaya blog
If your DIY skills are really up to scratch then you can kick it up a level by turning a simple, gnarly old branch into a fabulous piece of statement lighting. Like this. (Image from Design Sponge)
Or like this. Informal, bold, natural and inventive. Nice work! (Image from Vosgesparis blog)
And last, but not least, we have the Hanging Branch used as office organiser. If you prefer to be roaming the hills, rather than the internet, then perhaps this look can bring a bit of nature into your workspace! (Image from Fjeldborg blog)
Which is your favourite look? What else would you use the hanging branch for? Have you spotted this Random Trend cropping up anywhere else? Leave me a comment below and let me know!
Happy twigging!
