Statement Chairs #1 - Hans Wegner
One of the things I am banned from purchasing more of in our house is mugs. We've got hundreds, I'm a sucker for a lovely mug (like these!). I'm also a sucker for a statement chair - the second thing I'm no longer allowed to collect!
We already have a fabulous seventies hanging wicker chair, some vintage danish dining chairs, a circular mustard velour sofa/armchair and various others too many to mention. My husband will be delighted to hear that instead of purchasing more, I'm going to collect them here on the blog.
Welcome to Statement Chairs #1 - the first of a long line of beautifully designed chairs I'd love to own:
The Hans Wegner 'Papa Bear Chair' or 'Teddy Bear Chair' - in a gorgeous shade of turquoise:
Wegner believed that a chair should have no "back" side and should be a pleasure to view from all angles. He produced over 500 chair designs over his career and is credited with helping to turn Danish furniture into an international phenomenon. Wegner also designed the iconic 'Wishbone' chair, instantly recognisable as a design classic.
Wegner designed the 'Papa Bear' chair in 1951 for a company called AP Stolen. Originally named AP-19 it received its nickname after a critic described the armrests as being like "great bear paws, embracing you from behind". The chair has since been re-issued in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the manufacturer of the beech frame, PP Møbler:

Lust over the re-issued Teddy Bear Chair here.
Look out for more posts over coming months looking at danish designed classic chairs, iconic shapes like the Tulip chairs and other lovely seating which takes my fancy!
